At Korowal, we are dedicated to nurturing communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Our programs, including Inquiry-Based Learning, Oracy, Open Dialogue, and Restorative Practice, are designed to help students develop essential skills and personal attributes. By focusing on the power of dialogue, we enable students to connect meaningfully with others and navigate the complexities of the world with optimism and hope.
Inquiry-Based Learning
At Korowal, Inquiry-Based Learning is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. This approach empowers students to take charge of their own learning by encouraging them to ask questions, explore topics deeply, and develop their understanding through active investigation. Rather than passively receiving information, students engage in a process of discovery that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to the subject matter.
Through Inquiry-Based Learning, we create a dynamic learning environment where students are guided to explore ideas and concepts, formulate their own questions, and seek out answers. This method not only enhances learning but also nurtures essential life skills such as problem-solving, research, self-management, and communication. Inquiry-Based Learning at Korowal cultivates a lifelong love of learning and prepares students to navigate the complexities of the world with confidence and insight.
Dialogic Practices
At Korowal School, dialogic practice is at the heart of our educational approach. We believe that meaningful learning emerges through dialogue – engaging in thoughtful conversations where students exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and collaboratively explore new understandings.
Our classrooms are vibrant spaces where students are encouraged to articulate their thoughts and listen actively to others. Through structured and spontaneous discussions, we foster an environment where every voice is valued, and students learn to navigate complex ideas with empathy and respect.
Dialogic practice at Korowal extends beyond the classroom. It’s embedded in our school culture, influencing how we interact as a community. From peer-to-peer exchanges to teacher-student interactions, dialogue is the tool we use to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and deepen our collective knowledge and understanding of different perspectives and viewpoints.
By emphasizing dialogue, we equip our students with the skills to think critically, communicate clearly, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. This practice not only enhances academic learning but also prepares our students to be thoughtful, compassionate individuals who are capable of contributing positively to society.
Oracy
Oracy is a signature way of learning at Korowal. Defined by Professor A Wilkinson in 1965 as “the ability to use the oral skills of speaking and listening,” Oracy places speaking on equal footing with literacy and numeracy. At Korowal, we prioritize Oracy because we recognize its fundamental role in shaping confident, articulate individuals.
Our commitment to Oracy is driven by the belief that students should be confident participants in any conversation, capable of engaging in critical arguments, and expressing themselves fluently and cohesively in all situations. The ability to listen and consider diverse viewpoints is central to this practice. We aim for our students to become informed, compassionate, and discerning voices as they step into adulthood. In a democratic society, where voices for social justice and ethical practices are crucial, these skills are indispensable.
The ability to learn “to talk” and “through talk” is more important than ever, especially as these qualities are increasingly vital for success in future study or work. At Korowal, we ensure our students are equipped not only for academic success but also for meaningful participation in the world around them.
Korowal students are often noticed for the articulate and confident ways they can interact with others.
